Humanistic Community

If you are looking to live in a small, humanistically-oriented community, this one’s for you!

The Human Potential Center was founded in Austin, Texas 36 years ago by AHP’s Executive Director, Robert McGarey, M.A. It’s based on the works of Carl Rogers, Abraham Maslow, Virginia Satir, and other humanistic psychologists. Our goal is to build emotionally-healthy community where we can live as authentically and with as much integrity as possible. We aim for our emotionally-healthy community to encompass those who live on our Austin, Texas campus as well as all Center members wherever they live.

The Center is Endorsed by the Association for Humanistic Psychology and is an Affiliate of the Virginia Satir Global Network. At the Center, our mission is to spark the Creativity, Love and Playfulness of the Human Spirit through a variety of services that improve relationships, enhance creative thinking and promote physical and emotional wellness. We believe this is one of the best ways to produce a healthier, happier, and more peaceful world.

We are looking for individuals who value Humanistic Psychology and are committed to personal growth. We require every resident to attend a minimum of one event a month and to do 3 hours of volunteer work every month to improve the community in some way. This is an ideal place for self-improvement, actively engaging with like-minded people who long to build healthy community and who are willing to put in the time and effort that healthy personal connections like that require. We aim to live our ideals and walk our talk.

We have several currently-occupied brick-and-mortar living spaces along with one immediate opening, which  is a space with hook-ups for a trailer on our lightly-forested 1+ acre campus. We also plan to build some additional living space on our campus when the pandemic calms down a bit. Our neighborhood is conveniently located near downtown Austin with easy access to bus routes and all the local stores and restaurants you might need or want.
